Review
As a horror fan, I was excited to see a recent addition to the genre: “Jessabelle.” The film directed by Kevin Greutert and written by Robert Ben Garant tells the story of Jessie (Sarah Snook), a young woman who returns to her childhood home in Louisiana after a car accident leaves her paralyzed from the waist down.
The first thing that struck me about this movie is the beautiful and eerie cinematography. The film largely takes place in Jessie’s old family home, which sits on stilts over a swamp. The setting is ominous and foreboding, with Spanish moss hanging from the trees and fog rolling in at night. With each shot, you can feel yourself being drawn further into this creepy world.
The plot of the movie itself is also engaging. Jessie discovers some old videotapes left behind by her deceased mother, which seem to foretell ominous events in her future. She also begins experiencing encounters with spirits who seem to be trying to communicate with her. As she starts digging into her family history, she uncovers dark secrets that bring danger crashing down around her.
One of my favorite aspects of “Jessabelle” is Sarah Snook’s brilliant portrayal as Jessie. Snook brings depth and nuance to this character, portraying both vulnerability and strength. She carries the weight of the entire film on her shoulders and delivers an incredible performance.
Another standout cast member is Mark Webber who plays Preston Sanders, an old friend of Jessie’s who helps her navigate through some of the mysteries surrounding her situation. Webber adds a layer of warmth and kindness that balances out some of the more sinister elements at play in the film.
Even though “Jessabelle” is not without its flaws- including some predictable plot points- I found it impressive how it wasn’t afraid to take risks with its scenes and storylines. The movie manages to create suspenseful moments that keep you on edge without relying on cheap jump scares.
The film also has a great score by Anton Sanko. The music adds to the suspense and helps set the tone for the film’s eerie atmosphere.
Despite its merits, “Jessabelle” wasn’t a huge critical or box office success. It garnered mixed reviews and was largely overlooked by audiences at the time of release. However, I believe this movie deserves another chance and could potentially gain a cult following in the years to come.
One of my favorite scenes in “Jessabelle” is when Jessie is trying to decipher one of her mother’s cryptic messages. As she watches an old video tape with her father, they notice something peculiar in the footage. When her father asks if she sees it too, we cut to a shot of Jessie’s horrified expression as she realizes that there is something incredibly unsettling watching her from behind on the video.
The special effects in this scene are fantastic and make for one of the most memorable moments in the entire movie.
Overall, “Jessabelle” may not be for everyone- particularly those who prefer their horror movies to be more fast-paced with lots of jump scares- but if you’re a fan of atmospheric thrillers with strong performances and beautiful cinematography, you should definitely give it a chance.
