I must admit, when I first heard about “The Age of Innocence,” I was a bit skeptical. A period drama set in high society New York in the late 1800s? It sounded dry and stuffy. But after watching it, I can confidently say that this film is anything but.
Adapted from Edith Wharton’s novel of the same name, “The Age of Innocence” tells the story of Newland Archer (played by Daniel Day-Lewis), a wealthy lawyer engaged to the beautiful and poised May Welland (Winona Ryder). But when May’s cousin, the unconventional and free-spirited Countess Ellen Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer), returns to New York after leaving her abusive husband in Europe, Newland finds himself drawn to her despite societal norms.
The film explores themes of love, duty, tradition, and passion in a way that is both stunningly beautiful and subtly heartbreaking. Director Martin Scorsese brings Wharton’s novel to life with exquisite attention to detail – from the intricate costumes to the lavish parties – while also adding his own touches, such as the use of slow-motion during pivotal moments in the plot.
